Ceiling Fan Not Working in PJ? 6 Common Causes and Fixes

A ceiling fan that stops working or starts acting up is especially frustrating in Petaling Jaya’s tropical heat. Before calling an electrician, you can narrow down the cause yourself. Some fixes are simple enough to handle at home, while others require professional attention.

Here are the six most common ceiling fan problems we encounter in PJ homes and what causes them.

1. Fan Not Spinning at All

Possible causes: Faulty capacitor, tripped circuit breaker, broken speed switch, or motor failure.

What to check: First, verify the circuit hasn’t tripped at your DB box. If the breaker is fine, the issue is likely the fan’s internal capacitor — the most common failure point. Capacitors degrade over time, especially in the Klang Valley’s high humidity.

Fix: Capacitor replacement is a quick, affordable repair (RM50-100). If the motor itself has failed, replacement of the entire unit may be more cost-effective.

2. Fan Spinning Slowly

Possible causes: Worn capacitor, dry bearings, dust buildup, or voltage drop.

What to check: A fan that spins but has noticeably reduced speed usually points to a weakening capacitor or bearings that need lubrication. Heavy dust accumulation on blades also reduces efficiency.

Fix: Clean the blades thoroughly first. If speed doesn’t improve, the capacitor or bearings likely need attention.

3. Fan Making Noise

Possible causes: Loose screws, worn bearings, unbalanced blades, or faulty capacitor.

What to check: Tighten all visible screws — canopy, blade brackets, and mounting hardware. Check if blades are warped or misaligned.

Fix: Loose hardware is a DIY fix. Worn bearings require professional lubrication or replacement (RM50-80).

4. Fan Wobbling

Possible causes: Unbalanced blades, loose mounting, or warped blades.

What to check: Ensure all blades are identical in weight and shape. Check the mounting bracket is secure to the ceiling.

Fix: A blade balancing kit can resolve minor wobble. If the mounting bracket is loose — common in older PJ homes with deteriorating ceiling anchors — call a professional to remount securely.

5. Remote Control Not Working

Possible causes: Dead batteries, faulty receiver, or interference.

What to check: Replace batteries first. If that doesn’t work, the receiver module inside the fan may need replacement.

Fix: Receiver replacement is a straightforward repair for a certified electrician.

6. Fan Light Not Working (But Fan Spins)

Possible causes: Blown bulb, faulty light kit, or wiring issue at the light socket.

What to check: Replace the bulb first. If the new bulb doesn’t work, the light kit or its wiring connection is the issue.

Fix: Light kit wiring repairs should be done by a professional to avoid shock hazards.
