Can You Do Electrical Work Yourself in PJ, or Should You Hire a Pro?
Which electrical tasks are safe for DIY and which require a licensed electrician in Petaling Jaya. Legal requirements, safety risks, and cost comparison.

It’s tempting to handle minor electrical jobs yourself — changing a light bulb, replacing a faceplate, or resetting a tripped breaker. But where’s the line between a safe DIY task and one that requires a licensed electrician?
In Malaysia, the answer is largely defined by law. The Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) requires that all electrical installation, alteration, and repair work be carried out by certified wiremen. This isn’t just bureaucracy — it’s about safety.
What You CAN Do Yourself
These tasks are simple, low-risk, and don’t involve working on wiring:
- Replace a light bulb — Turn off the switch first. Use the correct wattage.
- Reset a tripped breaker — Switch it off fully, then back on. If it trips again, stop and call a professional.
- Replace a fuse in a plug — Use the correct amp rating (3A for lighting, 13A for power).
- Clean ceiling fan blades — Turn off the fan and clean with a damp cloth.
- Test your RCCB — Press the test button monthly.

What Requires a Licensed Electrician
Any work that involves opening a socket, switch, junction box, or DB box must be done by a Suruhanjaya Tenaga certified wireman:
- Socket or switch replacement — Even “simple” socket swaps involve live wiring.
- Ceiling fan installation — Requires secure mounting and proper wiring.
- Water heater installation — Mandatory ELCB protection and dedicated circuit.
- Any new wiring — Adding circuits, extending wiring, or installing new outlets.
- DB box upgrades — Involves working with the main supply.
- Aircon wiring — Requires dedicated circuits with correct MCB sizing.
The Legal Position in Malaysia
Under Malaysian law, unlicensed electrical work is illegal. If a fire or accident occurs due to DIY electrical work:
- Your home insurance may be voided
- You may face legal liability for injuries or damage
- The property may fail compliance inspections required for sale
The Real Cost of DIY
A common argument for DIY is saving money. But the comparison isn’t straightforward:
| Task | DIY Cost | Professional Cost | Risk if Done Wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Socket replacement | RM20 (parts) | RM50-80 | Electric shock, fire |
| Ceiling fan install | RM0 (if you have tools) | RM80-150 | Fall injury, wiring fault |
| Water heater install | RM0 | RM150-300 | Electrocution, no ELCB |
| Rewiring | Not advisable | RM3,000-8,000 | House fire, insurance void |
The small savings from DIY electrical work don’t justify the safety and legal risks. In Petaling Jaya, where older homes often have non-standard wiring configurations, the risks are even higher.
